New ERP Regulations

The ERP regulation is one of the laws established by the European Union to improve ecological design and energy efficiency. In this article, we will explain the most recent changes in the ERP regulation.

New ERP Regulation and Elimination of Conventional Technologies

The ERP (Energy Related Products) regulation aims to establish ecological design and operational requirements for all types of energy-consuming equipment with an ecological and sustainable focus. With this in mind, one of the novelties of this regulation will be the gradual elimination of certain conventional lighting technologies to improve efficiency (in this case, low-efficiency lighting solutions are under scrutiny).

Change in Energy Labeling

The new ERP regulation involves changes to the energy label, including:

  • New criteria for energy classification
  • Reorganization of energy classes: from A++ – G to A – G
  • A QR code will be added to provide additional information about the product.

New Information Obligations via EPREL

Information about products with energy labels is added to the EU product database (EPREL) by manufacturers. This database contains information not reflected on the energy label (for example, the first and last market placement dates, weighted energy consumption in kWh/1000h, energy efficiency class, and test reports, among others). When registering for the label, the following must be considered:

  • Product information accessible via the QR code on the label.
  • Suppliers must register in advance.
  • Access to the EPREL database will be available starting May 1, 2021.

Declared Energy Consumption According to ERP Regulation

Starting September 1, 2021, the declared energy consumption of a light source Pon cannot exceed the maximum allowed power Ponmax (in W):
