Good practices for the application of disinfectant UV light

The application of UV radiation is a highly effective technology for disinfection and pathogen elimination used in various fields, such as hospitals, public transportation, etc. However, it is important to follow a series of guidelines to ensure safety and minimize any potential adverse effects. How to apply UV radiation safely?

In most workplaces, exposure to UV radiation can be easily prevented if the proper precautions are taken:

1. Skin Protection

All exposed areas should be covered to avoid skin exposure to UV light. For this purpose, use personal protective equipment (PPE), such as a lab coat or nitrile gloves.

2. Eye Protection

In addition to skin, the eyes are also vulnerable and should be protected with face shields or safety goggles that comply with European standards EN166 and EN170.

3. Training

Proper training allows individuals performing these tasks to have the necessary knowledge to safely apply UV light and respond appropriately to potential situations. Training should cover health and safety, handling and maintenance of UVC sources, and first aid procedures after UV exposure.

4. Signage

Good signage is a key tool to prevent possible harm. Signage should indicate when a device is on. This is especially important for LED UV light, as it does not emit visible light.

5. Safety Switches

The possibility of accidentally turning on a UV light device should be minimized. One of the most effective solutions is using safety switches that are independent from general lighting and password-protected.

6. Instructions

The instruction manual and recommendations should always be available and accessible for both operators and maintenance personnel.

7. Maintenance

Maintenance tasks should be carried out following the manufacturer’s instructions and with the equipment unplugged.

Why is it important to follow safety measures?

Strictly following the recommended method will prevent potential damage caused by improper exposure. The main negative consequences of incorrect UV light application affect the eyes and skin. These effects depend on the duration of exposure and the amount of radiation received. For example, intense radiation can damage the retina quickly, or lower-intensity radiation over a long period can also cause harm.

Improper handling of UV radiation can lead to cataracts, corneal inflammation, and photoconjunctivitis. Regarding the skin, it can cause erythema (redness) and elastosis (degradation of collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis, leading to premature skin aging and loss of smoothness and firmness).
