Aalborg University, together with leading companies in the lighting sector, is working on the Double Dynamic Lighting project. The goal is to define a new concept of ideal lighting for work and to improve employee well-being.

What is the main lighting goal of this project?
Through dynamic natural and artificial lighting in a spatial context, its influence on user well-being in a workplace setting is being demonstrated. This project, called “Double Dynamic Lighting,” has been underway for three years, and the study aims to show the potential of new sensor and lighting technologies for worker well-being, improving performance, perceived office atmosphere, and visual comfort. On-site study results show that it is possible to define dynamic lighting environments that respond to the dynamics of natural light through a combination of direct and diffuse light. Therefore, this double dynamic lighting has been shown to have a positive impact compared to static lighting.
At LCE, we offer multiple innovative solutions so interior designers can develop workplace lighting projects aimed at providing more natural and comfortable light.
How does it work?
By combining direct and diffuse natural and artificial lighting. Different practical design guidelines have been developed through a series of research studies. This is being implemented in real work environments with dynamic light, in the university’s lighting labs, and in interactive 3D computer models.
Overall, the study confirms that combining directional lighting with diffuse ambient lighting that responds to exterior light, along with measuring natural light levels, is preferable to standard diffuse static lighting.

The study included various interviews, which concluded that there is a significant difference in perceived visual comfort between periods of dynamic and static lighting, clearly indicating that working with light zones and a combination of direct and diffuse components allows for a high level of visual comfort.
This study confirms once again that lighting not only affects our vision but also influences our mood and sense of well-being. Thus, lighting designed based on these parameters can help reduce stress and improve the comfort of an office team.
